How we test GPS pet trackers

These are the checks we run on every tracker we review, on our own dogs, in real yards and on real back roads. Here's exactly what we measure, and where each tracker stands.

Until a tracker's results are in, its review is based on the brand's published specs, its help center and owner feedback, and the review says so at the top.

The four hands-on checks

1. Ping speed

With live or lost mode on, we time how long it takes for the map to show a fresh location after we ask for one, and how often it updates while the dog is moving. We run it ten times and report the middle result.

2. Real battery life

We start from a full charge with the brand's recommended home setup (base station or home Wi-Fi) and go about our normal routine. We count the days, or hours for fence collars, from 100% down to 10%, the point where most apps tell you to charge.

3. Escape alert time

We walk the dog on a leash out of its safe zone and time how long until the alert reaches the phone. Five trials, middle result.

4. Weak-signal areas

We take each tracker to the same set of places: back roads, a wooded trail and the edge of town where phone service gets spotty. We note whether the location keeps updating and how far behind it falls.

Plus the true yearly cost

We add the device price and the cheapest plan that covers 12 months, from the brand's own site, and show the date we checked.

Extra checks for GPS fence collars

Boundary accuracy: we walk the dog toward the boundary at several points around the property and measure where the warning actually starts compared with where we drew the line. False corrections: we count warnings that fire while the dog is well inside the yard over a week.

How we choose our top pick

Our top pick is our opinion of the tracker we'd put on our own dogs, weighing what matters most in an emergency: that it's charged, that it reports quickly and that it stays on the dog. Commissions never decide it. Read our affiliate disclosure.

Keeping it current

We recheck prices regularly and show the date on every page. When a brand ships a new model or changes its plans, we update the review and the comparisons.
