Tractive DOG 6 review: the best value GPS tracker

The Tractive DOG 6 is the cheapest way into real GPS tracking: a $79 clip-on tracker with live updates every 2–3 seconds and health monitoring built in. The trade-off is a battery you'll charge every week or two.

Best value Our verdict

If the Fi's membership feels steep, the Tractive DOG 6 is the one to get. It costs less up front and much less over time ($72 a year on the five-year plan), its LIVE mode is fast, and it tracks resting heart rate and breathing rate on top of location. You'll charge it more often, and it clips onto a collar instead of being built in.

Buy it if

  • You want real GPS tracking for the least money
  • Your dog is over 9 lb, or you also want a tracker for a cat
  • You'd like health trends like resting heart rate

Skip it if

  • You know you'll forget to charge it (see Fi)
  • Your dog is rough on gear and could knock off a clip-on
  • You need to keep your dog in an unfenced yard

Why it's our best-value pick

The DOG 6 costs $79. Tractive's plans page lists a one-year plan at $144, two years at $204 and five years at $360. Year one comes to $223, about $95 less than the Fi Series 3+, and two years to $283. If you commit to five years, the plan works out to $72 a year, the lowest yearly tracking cost of any tracker we cover.

That price gets you the same core job as trackers that cost more: live GPS location from anywhere with a cell signal, escape alerts, and a light and sound on the tracker to help you spot your dog. Tractive is popular with owners, too. It held 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot across about 60,000 reviews in October 2026.

Live tracking and escape alerts

Most of the time the tracker reports every 2 to 60 minutes, depending on how active your dog is. When you need it, LIVE mode updates the map every 2 to 3 seconds. It switches itself off after 5 minutes to save battery, so extend it during a search.

You draw Virtual Fences on a map: green safe zones that alert you when your dog leaves, and red no-go zones that alert you when your dog enters, like a busy road. Tractive says alerts usually arrive within a couple of minutes, and almost instantly while LIVE mode is on. Anyone you share the tracker with gets the alerts too. When you're close, the tracker's LED and sound help in the dark, and a Bluetooth "radar" points you toward your dog even without a cell signal.

Health monitoring

This is where Tractive goes further than Fi. The DOG 6 tracks activity and sleep, and after a week of learning your dog's baseline it reports resting heart rate and breathing rate. It also watches for barking and scratching and sends alerts when activity or sleep patterns change over weeks or months. Tractive is clear that it isn't a medical device. Think of it as an early nudge to call the vet.

Battery

Tractive says the DOG 6 lasts up to 14 days if you set up a Power Saving Zone (your home Wi-Fi or Tractive's base station), and about 6 days without one. Setting one up is worth the five minutes. Heavy use of LIVE mode, weak cell signal and very hot or cold weather all shorten it. It charges over USB-C in under 2 hours.

For big dogs, the DOG 6 XL ($89, for dogs over 44 lb) has a much bigger battery: up to 6 weeks with a Power Saving Zone, close to the Fi. The XL Adventure ($119, over 55 lb) adds a tougher case.

Plans and what they cost

1 year$144$12.00
2 years$204$8.50
5 years$360$6.00

Plans are paid up front; the US site doesn't offer monthly billing. The plan includes live tracking, health monitoring, Family Sharing, 365 days of location history and coverage in 175+ countries. Tractive notes that pricing can vary by location, so confirm at checkout. Tractive Care, which replaces the tracker if it's lost, stolen or damaged, is offered at checkout. There's a 30-day money-back guarantee on the device and plan, and a 2-year warranty against defects. Compare every brand in what trackers really cost.

Coverage

The tracker has a built-in SIM that works across 500+ partner networks. It uses LTE-M first and falls back to 2G where it can. Tractive doesn't publish which US carriers it uses, but its site has a coverage checker for your area. When the tracker loses coverage, it keeps recording positions and uploads them when it reconnects, so you can see where your dog went. Our guide to dead zones compares every brand.

Fit and build

The DOG 6 weighs 1.4 ounces and clips onto the collar your dog already wears. It's for dogs over 9 pounds. It's rated IP68, safe to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes; rinse it after salt water.

Where it falls short

  • More charging. Plan on every week or two, more with heavy LIVE use.
  • The clip. A common owner complaint is the attachment clip coming off. Check it often, especially on dogs who crash through brush.
  • Drift in thick woods. Owners report GPS drift in wooded and remote areas, and some false or late fence alerts.
  • Email-first support. Owners describe support as slow and scripted.

Tractive vs Fi

The Fi Series 3+ is our top pick because it goes weeks longer between charges and lives inside the collar. The Tractive wins on price, health data and flexibility for cats. If you're torn, read Fi vs Tractive. For cats, Tractive's CAT 6 Mini builds the tracker into a breakaway collar.

Questions people ask

Does Tractive work without a subscription?

No. The plan pays for the built-in SIM that sends your dog's location. Plans start at $144 for a year, or $6 a month on the five-year plan.

How long does the Tractive DOG 6 battery last?

Up to 14 days with a Power Saving Zone at home and about 6 days without, according to Tractive. LIVE mode, weak signal and extreme temperatures drain it faster.

Is Tractive waterproof?

Yes. It's rated IP68, to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

Does Tractive work if there's no cell signal?

It keeps recording positions and uploads them once it's back in coverage. The Bluetooth radar can still point you to your dog when you're close.
